INFORMATION ON THE SERIES

The first volume of the series was generously sponsored by a single donor, who felt that the inspirational stories of the Ba’al Shem Tov, his followers, and their history, were a vital link in the chain of Jewish history. In the 17th century the majority of Eastern European Jewry lived in poverty and under social oppression. The Chassidic movement led by the Ba’al Shem Tov, and based on the mystical traditions of the Zohar, and the holy, Rabbi Yitzchak Luria of Sefad, brought light, hope and joy into their lives.

Jews use stories to teach lessons. There is a long tradition of storytelling in Jewish History. The Agadata of the Gemara and the Medrashim were the tools the Rabbis used in order to impart their profound teachings, wrapped in the cloth of a story. The Jewish story can be whimsical or poignant, tragic or joyous, frightening or gentle, but it is always uplifting and inspiring.

The rise of Chassidus two hundred years ago brought with it a new art-form – the Chassidic tale. The Ba’al Shem Tov and the Rebbes who came after him have always used the story as a way to transmit their wisdom to their followers. Sometimes the story can seem fantastic, yet within it, one finds the true knowledge that the Rebbe meant to convey. It is often said that Jewish History is our rearview mirror – showing us where we have come from, and helping us to understand where we are going. The Chassidic story is the lens of that mirror, refining the view and imparting the proper lesson to be gained from our history.
